Career Ready at KPBSD

wdcThe Workforce Development Center will be offering a variety of different after-school academies for KPBSD high school students. If a student successfully completes any of the 60-hour academies, they are eligible to receive a half practical art credit. Transportation may be provided if needed. The academies are free to all students.

These academies are possible thanks to funding from the Alaska Department of Labor and Workforce Development, the Alaska Department of Commerce and Economic Development, and the Alaska Youth First Program.

Kenai High School

October 18, 2010-December 14, 2010
Class days: Monday & Tuesday, 2:45 p.m.-5:45 p.m., and Saturday, 9:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m.
The students will be working on completing the classroom portable that students had started during the summer construction academy. Students will learn basic construction skills, framing and proper measuring. The skills learned during this academy will help participants secure jobs in entry-level construction careers.

Skyview High School

October 26, 2010-March 23, 2011
Class days: Tuesday & Thursday, 3:00 p.m.-5:00 p.m.
Students will begin constructing a classroom portable. Students will learn basic construction skills, framing and proper measuring. The skills learned during this academy will help participants secure jobs in entry-level construction careers.

Soldotna High School

Dates & Times TBA, January 2011
This is a Medical Terminology Academy for Health Professions. This class is available for Juniors and Seniors who completed or are currently enrolled in an Anatomy Class with a grade B or better. This class will teach students medical language. Students will earn high school & college credit for this class.

Skyview High School

Dates & Times TBA, January 2011
This class is available for Juniors & Seniors only and will teach students how to physically care for people of all ages in a multitude of different situations. This is a great class to see if you are interested in working in the health care field. Once students complete this class they will get a certificate from the state. Textbooks will be provided for students. Students may also choose to purchase a textbook for $35.00.
