KPBSD School Roofing Update

“The district is pleased with how well the roofing projects have gone over the past three summers. The good news for all the borough residents is that more school roof replacements than originally planned were completed with the bonded money,” said Steve Atwater, KPBSD superintendent. “Although roof replacement is not something that is always noticed by our community, this important building maintenance activity is critical for our schools. I offer thanks to all our residents for supporting the bond that made this possible.”

Voters in the Kenai Peninsula Borough approved a bond package of $16,866,500 to pay for school roof replacements three years ago. Eligible for a 70 percent reimbursement from the state, the projects leave the borough responsible for paying only 30 percent of the costs, an estimated $5.1 million plus interest. In the summer of 2013, six final roof projects from the 2010 bond will be completed:

  • Ninilchik School–The roofing work had a delayed start. The contractor will be completing the re-roofing work this season.
  • Chapman Elementary School–The roofing work is complete.
  • Moose Pass School–The majority of the work has been completed with minor detailing and metal work to be completed prior to August 10th
  • Soldotna Elementary School–The majority of the work has been completed with minor detailing and metal work left to go. The metal work may be a punch-list item that will be completed between August 10th and August 19th.
  • Kaleidoscope School of Arts and Science School–The project is on schedule to reach substantial completion by August 10.
  • Cooper Landing School–The majority of the work has been completed with the remainder scheduled for completion prior to August 10.

In October 2013, a bond proposal to extend the useful life of the remaining KPBSD school district roof systems in need of repair will be on the October 1, 2013 ballot. The State of Alaska has already approved the 70 percent reimbursement eligibility for the 2013 General Obligation Bonds that will be issued upon voter approval.
