Paraprofessional Required Training

When: Thursday, October 30, 2014 8:30 AM - 3:00 PM

Where: Challenger Learning Center & Seward Middle School

Description:

Life Space Crisis Intervention

In these trainings educators will learn the basic foundations of Life Space Crisis Intervention (LSCI) and skills to respond to a student experiencing stress.
According to Long and Wood, crisis is the product of a student's stress that is kept alive by the actions and reactions of others. When a youth’s feelings are aroused by stress, he or she learns to behave in ways that shield him or her from painful feelings. These behaviors (aggression, avoidance) may be undesirable, but they protect the child from distressing feelings. Others (parents, educators, peers) may perceive the behaviors as negative, and may respond in a negative fashion. This negative response produces additional stress, and the youth again reacts in an inappropriate matter. This spiraling of behaviors can cause a minor incident to escalate into a crisis.

Day 1/Part 1 of training will address 1. The impact of chronic stress and traumatic events in the lives of young people 2. The differences in psychological worlds between adults and youth in stress 3. Helping youth bring language to emotion and gain insight into their thoughts feelings and behaviors 4. The conflict cycle

Day 2/part 2   Enhancing your understanding of why competent educators/adults can become angry with select students who push their emotional buttons and how to increase your skills in expressing that feeling in effective ways.
