    To be eligible to apply for the Horatio Alger National Scholarship, applicants must meet the following criteria:

    • Be enrolled full time as a high school senior in the United States; be progressing normally toward graduation in spring/summer of 2020 with plans to enter a college in the United States no later than the fall following graduation
    • Exhibit a strong commitment to pursue and complete a bachelor’s degree at an accredited non-profit public or private institution in the United States (students may start their studies at a two-year institution and then transfer to a four-year institution)
    • Demonstrate critical financial need ($55,000 or lower adjusted gross family income is required)
    • Be involved in co-curricular and community service activities
    • Display integrity and perseverance in overcoming adversity
    • Maintain a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 2.0; and
    • Be a United States citizen

    Amount: Presidential Scholars will receive a medallion at an expenses-paid ceremony in Washington, D.C.  

    The program is open to all high school seniors who participate in a CTE program, who will graduate between January and June 2020, and who are U.S. citizens or legal permanent residents. Students at public, private, and home schools are eligible. This is not a scholarship program; it is a recognition program. Presidential Scholars will receive a medallion at an expenses-paid ceremony in Washington, D.C. The state may nominate up to five exemplary high school seniors. The Presidential Scholars will be chosen by a commission.

  • US Senate Youth Program

    Who:  Juniors and seniors who old an elected position in student government

    Amount:  $10,000

    This program is sponsored by the Federal Senate and underwritten by the Hearst Foundation.  It is open to juniors and seniors who old elected positions in student government for the entire academic year.  Students must be enrolled  in a public or private school.  State delegates will have outstanding leadership qualities and a strong commitment to public service.  They generally rant in the 1 percent of their states academically.  Each delegate receives a $10,000 undergraduate scholarship and an expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C., in March where two Alaska students will join 104 other delegates for Washington Week.

    If selected  to represent the state, the nominee must be available to attend the entire Washington Week from March 7-14.

  • The George S. & Stella M. Knight Essay Contest
    Expires On: Friday, January 31, 2020 7:00 PM

    Type:  Contest

    Who:  Freshman, Sophomore, Junior, and Senior students.

    Amount:  Up to $5,000

    To participate, students (grades 9-12) must submit an original 800- to 1,200-word essay based on an event, person, philosophy or ideal associated with the American Revolution, Declaration of Independence, or the framing of the United States Constitution. Each student's essay will be judged based upon its historical accuracy, clarity, organization, grammar and spelling, and documentation.

    In Alaska, students will first compete at the State level.  The winning essay will then be entered into the National competition where the first place essay will earn $5000, a medal, and a trip to a recognition ceremony.  2nd and 3rd place also earn cash awards. 

    State-level awards include $500 for 1st place, $250 for 2nd place, and $100 for 3rd place with recognition certificates as well as a medal for the first place winner.
