judged based upon its historical accuracy, clarity, organization, grammar and spelling, and documentation.
In Alaska, students will first compete at the State level. The winning essay will then be entered into the National competition where the first place essay will earn $5000, a medal, and a trip to a recognition ceremony. 2nd and 3rd place also earn cash awards.
State-level awards include $500 for 1st place, $250 for 2nd place, and $100 for 3rd place with recognition certificates as well as a medal for the first place winner.

The Alaska Peace Officers Association (APOA) is a statewide professional organization of federal, state, and local law enforcement, 911 dispatch professionals, corrections, and other justice system personnel in Alaska. The two scholarships will be awarded to two high school senior applicants. The one-time disbursement is made to the recipient's college financial aid office.
The essay will consist of a 1-2 page typed document (double spaced in times roman type 12 font) describing: intended course of study; desire/pursuit of career in law enforcement; any leadership roles, community activities and school accomplishments; other significant experiences that the student has been involved in; and summary as to why the student is deserving of the one-time $2,000 scholarship.
