Student Growth Maps and effective instruction

Beginning in the fall of 2015, the State of Alaska will require certified staff to include student learning data into their evaluation.

To prepare all staff for this, KPBSD secured a partnership with Education Northwest to support development of Student Growth Maps (SGM).SGM’s will clearly outline what student data is used to measure teacher performance. All SGM’s will center on student achievement growth through multiple valid and reliable measures.

The district will pilot the use of student learning data during 2014-2015 through the Student Growth Map with 100 of our staff. The pilot results will inform the final structure of the SGM system and provide the necessary support for our staff to successfully implement this new component of the evaluation system.

The initial stages of the pilot and partnership with Education Northwest began August 25-26, 2014, with volunteers from around the district. We will have the opportunity to have the goals and products developed through this initial training reviewed by Education Northwest so we can refine those products into exemplar student growth maps.

Dr. Steve Atwater, superintendent, said, “I am pleased that the pilot will help to prepare the district to meet the new evaluation requirement of tying student growth to teacher and administrator performance. Thank you to all our teachers who volunteered to be a part of the pilot.”

These exemplars would be available for general use throughout the district beginning in the fall of 2015.
